Do I need to have used a map before?

You don’t need to have used a map before to join Heads Up Adventures. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience. Just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to explore new places together! The Nav and Natter sessions are perfect for those new to navigation.

I’m worried I’ll slow everyone down

We walk at a relaxed pace with plenty of stops for Cathy to teach and you to learn the skills, plus a couple of snack/drink stops. Slowing down can sometimes allow for better conversations and connections! If you have concerns about your mobility, please contact Cathy who will be happy to put your mind at ease.

I can feel anxious about joining new groups

It’s completely normal to feel anxious about joining a new group. Remember, many people share the same feelings when stepping into unfamiliar territory. You’re truly not alone in this feeling, and the sessions are designed to have a relaxed, fun vibe that will have you feeling at ease in no time! If you’re not keen to join a group, a 121 or group session with friends could be a great alternative. Just contact Cathy to arrange.

Can I bring my dog?

Whilst I love dogs, not everyone is a fan so I only allow people to bring them if it’s a private session. This is so you can get the most out of the session and be able to practice the navigation skills without distraction. Cathy sometimes brings her own dog, but always checks with the group prior to the session.

Do I need specific kit?

Kit will vary depending on season, location and the event you are attending. Take a look at the kit list for my recommendations

I am afraid of heights

Cathy has experience of working with people that are afraid of heights or struggle with Vertigo (fear of falling). It is essential that you communicate any anxiety around this with Cathy prior to the session (via the consent form) and she is always happy to call and chat through this.

Do you offer walks all year round?

Yes! Being outside in most weathers is good for the soul (and this is where those waterproofs come into their own!), and walks are available throughout the year.

Do walks always go ahead regardless of weather?

Sessions will not go ahead in severe weather such as prolonged heavy rain, or significant snow/icy conditions. If a session is cancelled due to the weather, it will be rescheduled for a future date (see cancellation policy on joining instructions)

I’d like to do a full day or weekend, is that possible?

Absolutely! Check out the events page to see what’s on. Alternatively Cathy can offer something tailored to a 121 or group of friends, just get in touch with your requirements.

How can I progress my navigation skills with you?

If you’re a complete beginner, I recommend you attend a couple of Nav and Natter sessions in different locations initially, after which you can progress on to other sessions which will extend your skills further.

If you’re looking for more of a refresher, you can join Nav and Natter PLUS where you’ll focus more on developing your compass skill, or how about Night Navigation, any of my guided walks or a mountain trip – I’m always happy to support you even if it’s not a specific navigation training event.

How many are in the group?

The perfect group size is 6 so everyone can get around a map and see what i’m talking about! I also work with larger groups up to 12 and smaller groups from 1-2-1’s or couples & friends.

Can I do a 1-2-1?

Absolutely! Cathy has a very flexible approach to 1-2-1’s and can create a session tailored to your needs, ranging from 2 hours with 1 hour in a cafe talking about/looking at maps over a cuppa before heading out for a short walk to introduce a couple of skills, to a full day, including walking off path using only a compass. Just get in touch with your requirements and we can arrange a date.

Do you recommend any walking apps?

YES! Whilst nothing beats a physical map and compass, there are many fantastic walking apps out there and I view them as an essential addition to your navigation kit both out on the hill and for route planning. Cathy mainly uses the OS maps app as it directly relates to a paper OS map, but there are plenty of other options.

What areas are your walks in?

Various locations across the South Downs currently furthest East is YHA Southdowns and furthest West is Sullington. Looking to expand in 2026.

Do you recommend walking with poles?

Walking with poles can offer several benefits, improving stability on uneven ground, reduces strain on your joints and can improve your posture when walking. They are definitely worth trying out to see if you enjoy using them. Cathy always carries poles and is happy for you to try them out on a session – they can be a faff while trying to learn map skills though!

My eyesight isn’t very good, will that affect my map reading?

Glasses can be a faff with map reading, but having them on a string can help (it’s a good look!) and it’s what I have to use these days! The compass also has a magnifying glass which works wonders for the small detail.

I’d love to carry my kit and wild camp, do you offer this?

You’d love my Carry Your Kit and Camp event – an introduction to rucksack packing, carrying your kit and camping in a semi-wild camp that has a toilet and campfire. Call me for a chat!
