EXPLORER 2

THE DETAILS

DAY 1: We’ll meet at the campsite for a cuppa, introductions & a map chat before heading out for the our day walk (approx 10 to 12 km). There will be plenty of opportunity to practice the skills, stop for snacks, enjoy lunch on the hill & the opportunity as a group to plan your route back to the campsite!

Once our tents are up we’ll have the evening to cook a simple meal, enjoy the campfire, views & company.

DAY 2: A chilled out morning to enjoy the sunrise (ok, so I can’t guarantee that bit!), have a simple breakfast (provided) and de-camp. As a group you’ll plan a short walk to finish at the pub by lunch time!

A full Explorer day learning or refreshing your navigation skills with an additional back to basics camping experience. This is a fabulous opportunity to immerse yourself outdoors for a day & night, connecting with others & nature, chatting around a campfire, enjoying beautiful views over fields & downland and just switching off from your daily life for a while.  As well as practicing navigation you’ll gain tips on putting up tents, rucksack packing, how & what to cook on small camping stoves and more.  We’ll meet at the campsite so no need to carry all your kit either. Aimed at complete beginners or those wanting to refresh their nav skills & experience a night under the sussex stars. Come & try it! Nothing to lose & so much to gain, physically & mentally. Take a look at the quote below from my recent trial of the Explorer 2…

“For the first time since I’ve had children, I’ve realised I can take longer than an hour off here & there to do something significant for me. Pursuing hobbies is always so bitty & in short bursts of time. Your course is a wonderful way to take time over something & enter a different world and headspace. Most memorable was laughing and feeling part of something out of the ‘norm’.”

THE DETAILS!

TRAINING DAY 1: As per Explorer Day meeting in cafe for introductions over a cuppa, map chat & out on a 7 – 8 km walk to learn all the navigation basics. You’ll have a little(!) homework task to look at a map, find specific grid references & plan a short section of the Day 2 route.

TRAINING DAY 2: A 5 – 6 km walk, the day focuses on developing confidence in Day 1 skills, maybe leading a section or two with others, more detailed use of the compass and beginning to plan your expedition route. There will be a 1 or 2 week gap between training & expedition; plenty of time to plan & think about your route, communicate with each other, ask Cathy any questions, sort kit, head out walking – so you feel prepared for the Expedition!
